Everlasting Supreme Democracy

We've got coffee, we've got bananas, we've got a constitution that changes when our president doesn't want to leave! In 2006 President Uribe convinced our citizens that we needed to change the Constitution so he could stay on for a second term. We've got another election in 2010 -- come be part of our historic, first-ever three-term presidency! President Manuel Zelaya of Honduras couldn't even talk about changing the constitution in public without getting overthrown by the Honduran military, but with any luck, soon President Uribe will have accomplished this feat twice. Just check out this endorsement from President Obama, who reportedly went on to say, "...and the Cartagena beaches are a-maaazing."

Obama's June 2009 statement: "We know that our experience in the United States is that two terms works for us and that after eight years, usually the American people want a change. I related to President Uribe the fact that our most revered President, or at least one of our two most revered Presidents, George Washington, part of what made him so great was not just being a founder of our country, but also the fact that at a time when he could have stayed President for life, he made a decision that after service, he was able to step aside and return to civilian life. And that set a precedent then for the future."
